WIOMN works to elevate the profile of mangroves as a critical ecosystem that supports coastal livelihoods, biodiversity, and climate change mitigation and adaptation.
This is reflected in project activities that engage policymakers, stakeholders, and the public. Under the Bengo Project, WIOMN and partners support national and regional policy dialogues, contribute to the development of a Regional Mangrove Action Plan under the Nairobi Convention, and organize awareness activities to highlight the importance of mangroves. In addition, outputs from projects such as RECOS are presented at major regional platforms like scientific symposiums, ensuring that mangrove issues are visible at both scientific and policy levels. WIOMN lead the production of the Second edition of the book Mangroves of the Western Indian Ocean: Status and Management with a chapter UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, the book positions mangroves within global restoration efforts and highlights the Western Indian Ocean region as an important contributor to international environmental goals. By linking science, policy, and practice, the project helps elevate mangroves on regional and global agendas. The publication raises the visibility of mangrove restoration as a critical priority for the region by showcasing its importance for climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and coastal livelihoods.
Through these efforts, WIOMN ensures that mangroves are increasingly recognized as a priority ecosystem in environmental governance and sustainable development across the region.
