Secure and prosperous mangrove ecosystem for the better future
A declaration to establish the WIO Mangrove Network was made on 5th October 2011 in Mombasa, Kenya by a group of regional mangrove experts, having recognized the important role that mangroves play by providing many critical ecosystem goods and services to millions of people in the region; appreciated that these ecosystems face a myriad of similar management challenges across the region ranging from overexploitation, conversion, pollution and more recently climate change related impacts; acknowledged that there is currently no forum which brings together regional mangrove scientists, managers and policy makers.
The WIOMN comprises 10 member states, namely: Comoros, Kenya, Mauritius, Madagascar, Mozambique, Reunion-Mayotte, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, and Tanzania. The network has elected a committee to manage and coordinate the activities of the network with the respective countries in the WIO region.
WIOMN offers a range of opportunities aimed at strengthening mangrove conservation, research, and sustainable management across the region. Through its platform, WIOMN facilitates collaborative research, capacity building, supports, dissemination of research outputs, fosters innovation, and knowledge exchange among scientists, practitioners, policymakers, and local communities.
