WIOMN promotes the standardization of methodologies used in mangrove assessment and monitoring across the Western Indian Ocean region to ensure consistency, accuracy, and comparability of data.
This programme is strongly driven by current regional projects. Under the RECOS project, WIOMN is leading the development of a standardized regional protocol and manual for mangrove monitoring and assessment, incorporating harmonized data collection methods and tools across multiple countries. In parallel, projects such as the Pemba Channel initiative apply standardized approaches to mangrove resource assessments, including forest inventory, biomass estimation, and mapping of degradation and restoration areas. The Bengo Project also contributes through mangrove assessments and monitoring activities that generate comparable data across Kenya, Madagascar, and Tanzania.
By aligning methodologies across projects and countries, WIOMN ensures that data generated in the region is reliable and supports informed decision-making for conservation and restoration efforts.
