About Us

Who We Are

The Western Indian Ocean Mangrove Network (WIOMN) is a regional platform that brings together scientists, practitioners, policymakers, and communities to promote the sustainable management and conservation of mangrove ecosystems across the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region.

Our Origin

WIOMN was conceived in 2011 during a regional meeting in Mombasa, Kenya, where stakeholders identified the need for a coordinated approach to mangrove conservation. The initiative was later supported by the Nairobi Convention in 2012. After years of collaboration, WIOMN was formally registered in Zanzibar in March 2021 and officially launched in June 2021 with support from WWF Tanzania.

Vision

A secured, productive, and sustainable mangrove ecosystem in the Western Indian Ocean region that supports improved community livelihoods, economic development, and resilience to climate change.

Mission

To position WIOMN as a leading collaborative network that identifies and advances emerging scientific and practical frontiers in mangrove conservation and sustainable use. The network strives to generate and promote high-quality science, support evidence-based policy and management decisions, and foster strong partnerships at national, regional, and international levels to enhance research, conservation, and sustainable development of mangrove ecosystems.
