About Us

Who We Are

The Western Indian Ocean Mangrove Network (WIOMN) is a regional platform that brings together scientists, practitioners, policymakers, and communities to promote the sustainable management and conservation of mangrove ecosystems across the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region.

Our Origin

WIOMN was conceived in 2011 during a regional meeting in Mombasa, Kenya, where stakeholders identified the need for a coordinated approach to mangrove conservation. The initiative was later supported by the Nairobi Convention in 2012. After years of collaboration, WIOMN was formally registered in Zanzibar in March 2021 and officially launched in June 2021 with support from WWF Tanzania.

Vision

A secured, productive, and sustainable mangrove ecosystem in the Western Indian Ocean region that supports improved community livelihoods, economic development, and resilience to climate change.

Mission

To identify new and emergent fields of scientific and practice research in the conservation, including sustainable utilization of mangrove resources, assist in the making of informed policy and management decisions, stimulating high quality science, and lead collaborations at national, regional and international scientific research and conservation programmes.
